Welcome
to 4-H in the Classroom !
The Lawrence County 4-H School Enrichment program provided
curriculum support to classroom teachers and improved competencies in science.
More than 2500 youth in eight school districts utilized the inquiry-based
learning process through participation in subject area programs including
weather, soil, water, plants, chick embryology and other science activities.
4-H can also help parents with their home schooling
programs. The skills and social interaction found in 4-H complements any
curriculum plan.

About 4-H in the Classroom
The 4-H program can provide teachers the resources and
lesson plans to teach science, social studies, language arts, economics,
leadership, etiquette and character in their class rooms. Extension staff will
even visit to present the lessons. These fun-filled, hands-on activities still
provide students the skills required for Ohio's proficiency tests, while keeping
their interest.

Updates
In
partnerships with local schools, several 4-H promotional and educational
activities were conducted. A 4-H club has been organized at the Open Door
school where 65 members learned about 4-H and participated in an “Eating
Healthy” project. Several after school mall clubs in 4 school districts were
organized with some doing many activities and some focusing on nutrition,
babysitting certification and etiquette.
105
eighth grade students at Dawson Bryant Middle School developed decision making
skills in economics and career planning while participating in a “Welcome To
the Real World Program” conducted by OSU Extension.
This activity was especially instrumental in allowing students to reflect
on their past school performance and envision their future in regards to
planning and preparation. Students were provided a job occupation with a salary
and required to attend “real life” stations to simulate a monthly budget.
These stations consisted of “Uncle Sam” who took taxes, the bank that
handled your checking account and set up a mandatory savings account, the car
dealer who provided you a new or used vehicle and various insurances, realty,
and utilities. Local business people staffed the stations relevant to their
field.
In
partnership with other organizations, the 4-H program has been able to reach new
audiences. A “Soil, Water or Plants” education session was conducted in
partnership with the Soil and Water Conservation Service in eight school
districts to 695 third and fourth grade youth.
Extension has also entered into a grant with the Lawrence County
G.R.A.D.S. program to provide babysitting classes free of charge. Two school
districts offered these classes in after school malls.
